Howdon Treatment Facility

Project Overview

Our team undertook a project at Howdon Treatment Works to produce a detailed 3D model of the facility. This model was needed by the client to support new pipeline works and enable efficient asset management throughout the site. By providing an accurate digital representation of the infrastructure, we aimed to assist the client in planning and executing upgrades with minimal disruption to existing operations.

Howdon Treatment Works, located near Newcastle upon Tyne, has been a cornerstone of North Tyneside’s wastewater management since its establishment in the 1960s. Designed to treat wastewater and manage effluents for the surrounding region, it plays a critical role in protecting the local environment and public health. Over the decades, Howdon has seen numerous upgrades to meet modern environmental standards and support the region’s growing population. Its history reflects the evolution of wastewater treatment technologies and the increasing emphasis on sustainability in utility management.

Project Execution

To capture the necessary data, we employed both a terrestrial Leica RTC laser scanner and a NavVis VLX mobile scanner. The combination of these technologies allowed us to efficiently gather high-resolution point cloud data across the expansive facility while achieving a 15mm tolerance, meeting Level of Detail 4 (LOD4) standards. The Leica RTC was instrumental for static, precise scanning in critical areas, while the NavVis VLX offered mobility and speed, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the treatment works. Using this point cloud as a reference, we developed a detailed 3D model in Revit, giving the client an accurate representation of the existing infrastructure for precise planning and decision-making.

The 3D model provided the client with a reliable, high-detail asset for planning pipeline work and managing site infrastructure. With this model, the client could visualising

e existing conditions, streamline project coordination, and conduct precise asset management without risking disruptions to daily operations. This case study illustrates how advanced 3D scanning and modelling can empower utility facilities like Howdon to modernise and expand while preserving operational continuity and efficiency.
