With incredibly accurate, fast and reliable scans that capture millions of three-dimensional data points, we’re able to create a comprehensive and exact picture of a structure or site in just one visit with our 3D laser scanning services.
What is 3D Laser Scanning?
In short, 3D laser scanning is an invaluable tool that gets surveys right the first time. It removes the need for traditional measuring equipment, including CMM touch probes, instead using a line of laser light to capture the shape of physical objects. The 3D laser scanning process is completely non-contact and thus non-destructive.
How accurate is 3D laser scanning?
3D laser scanning scans over a million data points per second, capturing high-accuracy 3D data as you move the laser over the object. 3D laser scanning captures information that extends beyond the main focus of the survey to generate a meticulous data ‘point cloud’ that forms an exact three-dimensional picture of a structure or site in one go, eliminating the need to return to a site.
Once assembled, the point cloud can be integrated with design software to eliminate any guesswork and provide total accuracy.
What can 3D laser scanning be used for?
Any need where you wish to capture the 3D data about an object’s shape can be satisfied with 3D laser scanning. It is the most accurate way to acquire data for reverse engineering; it is used for inspection through comparison to CAD nominal data; and it has a number of uses in industrial design, automotive design, aerospace design, robotics design, and, of course, architectural and construction design.
Why should I use 3D laser scanning?
With its high speed and accuracy, 3D laser scanning brings significant cost savings. There are none of the overheads associated with the use of manual measuring equipment and practices, while programming laser scanning cycles is also very easy and time-efficient.
3D laser scanning is particularly useful on complex geometries, whether due to size or complexity. The non-intrusive nature of the scan means it is also beneficial on projects where there is a risk of damage through manual intervention.
